Janelle Taylor telling a tale widely told in Pelham even today.  This incident happened in the 1960’s.

Fred Parks & Garnet Clay of Pelham were friends and drinking buddies.  Fred owned an old pickup truck, which had the doors and bed removed as well as the windshield and back glass.  The windshield wipers were still in place, however.  One day as the pair was tooling around in the truck, both probably a little tipsy, it began to rain.  Fred turned on the windshield wipers, which did their job of flapping back and forth to wipe the windshield had it been there.  Garnet was appreciative of having his part of the windshield cleaned by the wipers and grunted out this now famous line in Pelham:  “Much better, Mr. Parks, much better”.
